Starting a business today is riskier than ever before, but also is the most rewarding than anyone could ever imagine. The Internet has allowed people to build home based businesses and make enormous incomes in the comfort of their own home. The Internet has also allowed smaller companies to look big fast and reach potential customers around the entire world. As I talk with small business owners I have realized that most of them have many things in common when it comes to the Internet. So here are 3 Internet Myths that Hurt Small Businesses.

1. Internet is for tech savvy people- That just not true, the Internet looks like this 15 lane highway with thousands of cars going in different directions. Looks intimidating but, once you get into your car and get into the mix you will soon realize that everything flows pretty easy.

2. The Internet is for bigger companies with unlimited resources- Big mistake, the Internet is for everyone. The Internet can give smaller businesses with limited resources the ability to market and reach thousands of potential customers. Besides word of mouth marketing, the Internet is one of the few resources that small businesses can use to grow their clientele base with very minimal investment.

3. Everyone is using the Internet, it’s to crowded for my business- Less than 40% of businesses out there use the Internet for their business. The internet is growing at an rate of 3-5% a year and less than 23% of the population is using the Internet, so there are enough customers to go around for everybody. It’s time you stop letting your competition get your share.

The Internet today has allowed marketing become a little more mainstream and has allowed companies to reach consumers easier than ever. So if your business is not doing any type of email marketing campaigns, then exactly what type of marketing is your business doing? More than 200,000 small business, non-profits, and other association are using email marketing to drive repeat business, get referrals, and boost their business success. So, where’s your share of customers going? I’m not talking ‘spam’ email marketing, that is a no good conversation for another day. I’m talking about reaching your current clientele that knows who you are and would be interested in hearing from you every once in a while. Here are five reasons why email marketing makes sense for your business.

→ It’s Affordable

With Email Marketing, you can communicate with your customers regularly, making it easy to stay in touch, stay connected, and build your business. Because it’s permission-based, your customers will look forward to, and really read your email communications.

→It’s Easy

A wide selection email templates and step-by-step, point-and-click Email Wizard makes it easy to create high-impact, professional-looking emails in no time, and with no technical expertise.

→Its Measurable

Thanks to our information-packed, easy-to-read reports, you can see, and learn from your email results – who opened your email, what links they clicked on, and more.

→It builds brand

Last week I had a meeting with one my clients and they were talking about all the plans they had with their upcoming business plans. This client went on to talk about the ways he was going to increase his business, cut costs, and get more customers in his door. I began to think to myself and realize this client is fighting an uphill battle as most business owners are. There must be psychological worm infested in business owners brains believing that they must take everything upon themselves. Most small business owners feel they have to be the accountant, cook, cleaner, designer, marketer, lawyer, etc. I’m not saying it’s not good to know some of these things but enough is enough. Use your skill-set to do what your good at and use other people skills to enhance your business. I know, you do not have the money to pay for an accountant or marketer, but your job as a business owner is to find resources and low cost methods to increase your business. In reality, most business owners are finding low cost methods to maintain thier business, not increase their business. As a small business owner you need to stop fighting the uphill battle of trying the do it all operation, use resources such as the internet, local communities, and small business associations to help find the personnel that can help your business prosper and increase it’s rate of return.

Yes, I know you’ve heard it plenty of times, the economy is down, no one is spending money, and businesses are struggling to keep their doors open. Truth is there are still a good percentage of potential customers out there still willing to spend money on your product or services, you just have to connect with them. Jump-starting your business today couldn’t be tougher for business owners but with the right tools and little guiduince it is possible. I’m going to give you three keys ways to get your business back on track and have customers coming in your door quickly.

1.Direct Mail – when I say direct mail I mean postcard advertising. Direct mail is a great way to reach out to current and potential customers. With a average cost of $0.25 to $0.35 per postcard (postage included) direct mail gives you an opportunity to tell customers about your new products, introduce yourself to them, or keep them in the know about your business so they won’t forget who you are. All direct mail campaigns should be sent to targeted demographic customers that fit the products or services you are trying to sell. If your company specializes in beauty products you wouldn’t want to send your mail to all men, that would be a waste of money. Therefore, with the help of a marketing company you can target your campaign to a specific group of people that would more likely be interested in your products or services. Understanding who your customers are and reaching out to them with a well designed postcard is the only way a direct mail marketing campaign can be a success. A direct mail campaign is very strategic in its approach, and should be done by designers and marketers who have your long term interests in mind. A strategic and well directed direct mail marketing campaign can build your customer base quickly and give your business a much improved ROI versus other basic advertising methods.

2. Google Adwords – one of the most cost effective ways to advertise period. Adwords is a great way for your company to advertise to people searching on the internet for your products or services. Unlike other conventional advertising methods such as; magazines, billboards, or newspapers, Adwords allows you to control your own monthly advertising budget and you only pay when a customer actually clicks on your ad. Whether you have $1000/mo. or $10/mo., your advertising marketing dollars can be easily budgeted through Google Adwords, so it’s literally affordable to every business owner. With a carefully crafted Adwords advertising campaign you can easily target your products or services to customers in a specific local geographic area or take your campaign worldwide it is completely up to you, now that’s what I call ”spending your money wisely”.

3. Email Marketing – starting as low as $15/mo., email marketing is another cost effective approach to reach out to potential or existing customers to let them know you exist. According to the Direct Marketing Association email delivers an average return of $57.25 for every dollar spent on email marketing. Email marketing gives you the opportunity to become the expert in your field by sending your customers news, surveys, tips or promotions from your business. As you know with any business, out of sight is out of mind, and email marketing allows you to keep in contact with hundreds to thousands of customers at any given time. You never have to worry about customers forgetting who you are and when it comes time to use your service or product they’ll know just who to call.

Many of my customers know that I am a sports fanatic. The NFL draft just ended over the weekend and many of the top college football players will get the opportunity to test their skills in the NFL. Many players will be payed millions of dollars based off their “potential”to be successful in the NFL.

Many players will succeed but unfortunately more will fail. So I like to ask you this question does potential work in the business world? Potential means capable of being or becoming. What is your business capable of becoming? Does it have room to grow? Are there ways you can improve your business?

Whether you’re a home based business, start-up or been in business for the past 10 years, your potential is what should keep you driving forward. You have to see yourself beyond what everyone else thinks or says about you. Potential just doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a methodical process that takes determination, planning, and vision which then metamorphisises itself into a successful operating company.

NFL players are similar to the business world because most players start training at a young age to build their foundation. As they become older the challenges become tougher and other players will begin to weed themselves out, but only the ones who stay committed, handle life challenges, and keep proper focus will continue to prosper. Once the few players reach the NFL, all those challenges and past experience comes to fruition and they will soon begin soon to reap the rewards that NFL will bring to them.

Once you realize your company’s potential do not let anything stand in your way from reaching that potential. If you get knock down get back up and keep fighting because your success depends on it.

Many times I run across clients who say the for letter words that make the hairs on back of my neck stand up ” I not a Salesperson”. Truth of the matter is that you are whether you want to be or not. 99% of businesses that are in operation today are run on the basic principles of selling.

Selling a product to a consumer who wants to purchase your product. If you’re a business owner who doesn’t like to sell, this attitude could be detrimental to your long-term business plans and by the way it’s probably costing you money too. Selling works in conjunction with your any marketing campaigns your company participates in. No matter if your doing web marketing, advertisement, flyers or etc., your customers will eventually be called to action.

Once you prospective customers calls you or visits your store your job as an organization is to sell them on the products and services you can offer them. This is most critical part of any business operation because you just spent money to get them there, and if you or your staff doesn’t take the time to show them how your products or services can fit into their life, then your throwing money away. If your in business to throw away money please send it to me.

Selling just doesn’t stop when customers come into your door, it is a continuing process that can go on forever. Now that you sold them your service or product, upsell them on additional products and ask them for referrals. Upsell and referrals are two main ingredients that can increase your bottom line without much work involved.

Take McDonald’s for instance when you go in to to purchase a #1 value meal for $4.00. Does the clerk take your order and just turnaround and hand it to you (some clerks maybe), the answer is no they will ask you if you want to supersize that ($.50), do you want cheese ($.25), would like an apple pie for dessert ($1.00). The clerk just took your total from $4.00 to $5.75 in a matter of seconds. Imagine doing that to 100 or 1000 customers in a span of a month, that clerk just made McDonald’s hundreds of dollars extra month just by asking the right questions.

That what selling is, asking questions that your customers will respond positively to. I understand that you have your hard core salesperson who don’t take no for an answer, but you or your organization doesn’t have to be that type of salesperson to achieve positive results. Do you consider a McDonald’s clerk a salesperson, but the clerks have mastered the art of asking their customers the rights questions based off their needs and wants.

No one understands your products better than you, and once you convey that message to your customers and build that trust, not only will you increase your bottom line, you will have gained a customer for life.
